ADVENTURES IN ADVAITA VEDANTA...
Adventures in Advaita Vedanta, the philosophy and science of spirit. We are one you and I; are you curious why?..
Further Gems
Hari OM
Freedays continue sharing views from YAM's trip to CM Mumbai.
Another gem of the new setup called Pradeep, was the 'walkway to realisation'. The Mahaavaakyas having now been explained in a nutshell to you, there was also a physical representation on a boardwalk incline.
There are quotes and prompts for contemplation to help us understand what is involved in this process.
As stated, it is not merely an intellectual exercise, but a full-immersion experience.
There are warnings also, of the many hurdles and pitfalls along the way. No matter how adept one may become, there is danger right until that goal is at last attained. It can be quite easy to become overwhelmed with the amount of self-work which must be undertaken.
The aim is to purify oneself right down to the seed of each thought. A daily struggle!
The walkway also gave encouragement and hope.
At the top of the boardwalk, one turns around and can see more clearly. There is no clutter to one's vision, no distracting pattern or colour.
There is clarity.
This part of Pradeep also gave much joy.
The tie-in to the teachings under way also added to this. 'Stuff' was getting stirred up. There was reminder of one's purpose, which may have gotten a bit crusted-over in the past three years.
There was also a sense of an ending and beginning. Exactly what that's about remains to be discovered!!!

Beyond Knowledge
Hari OM
'Text-days' are for delving into the
words and theory of Advaita Vedanta.
We are now studying Aatmabodha. As
always, with each week, you are encouraged to review the previous teachings and
spend some time in contemplation of the meanings as the affect your life.
Please do consider purchasing the text. Remember, also, to recite the mangala charana before each study and
review the lessons before each new one.
We
saw last week a directional verse from the Guru. It is followed up with another
crucial saadhana shloka - to be meditated upon.

Realise That to be Brahman, having seen which nothing
more remains to be seen, having become which, one is not born again in this
world, and having known which, nothing remains to be known.
At
casual glance this can appear to be a straight repetition of the previous
verse. However, closer inspection reveals some difference of focus for the
shishya to work with.
The
first of these saadhana verses more or less demanded the seeker to properly
seek and offered a 'pointer' as to what is sought. "Go there and leave
this behind", sort of thing. Now there is an assumption that one may be
approaching destination and there is more motivation provided as to what the
experience may be like. We are told that, in such a perfected state, there lies
immense tranquillity such that nothing can now destroy it. Peace perfect peace.
If, indeed, we have any idea of 'wanting' within us still, then we have further
to go, for the destination has not yet
been reached. The slightest agitation or lingering of longings in the bosom of
the seeker will disturb progress, no matter how advanced.
In
the state of Perfection, there is absolutely no desire or concept of need at
all. There may be awareness of the external, we are after all still anchored to
the BMI matrix, but the inner being no longer finds any attachment there and
therefore does not 'see' anything and, what is more, Knowledge is complete.
Aatmavidya (Knowledge of Self) shows that all other knowledges are but pale
reflections of the Consciousness attempting to find its way back to source. All
other knowledge can only shine in reflected light of the True Knowledge. All
knowledges, all objects and experiences of them melt into the brightness that
now shines.
Further,
in attaining this exalted state, we finally pay off all debts of karma. Once
the praarabdha of the body is complete, this reunited soul will not again face
rebirth.
Be The Light

Application - that is what 'Workings-days' are about!
The Narada Bhakti Sutra is our guide for a while… the
nature of Love (with the capital 'ell') and a full exploration of it. As
always, you are encouraged to seek out the full text from Chinmaya Publications
(links in side-bar); but for those who prefer e-readers, this version is recommended. Whilst awareness and interest can be
raised by these posts on AV-blog, they cannot substitute for a thorough reading
and contemplation...and practice!
Chapter
Eight; Section 2 - Obstacles and Remedies; Cultivate Devotion. The key virtues
having been indicated, there is and extension of thinking on the matter;
svRda

Sarvadaa
sarvabhaavena nishchantitair-bhagavaaneva bhajaniiyaH ||79||
Always free from all mental anxiety, the Lord alone is
to be invoked and sought after, with all factors of our personality.
Again
the Guru is clear; there is no room for anything other than whole-hearted
immersion in the path of devotion. Release the worries and warts of life unto
Him. In the Bhagavat Gita, Sri Krishna says "fly unto Him for refuge with
all your being O Bharata; by His Grace you shall obtain "Supreme Peace and
the Eternal Abode." In the Bible,
Yeshu says "come unto me, ye who are heavy laden, and I shall give ye
rest."
Go
in surrender to the Higher with all your heart and being. Call upon Him,
through prayer, through song; lie before Him with your heart open and pour it
out to Him… not, though, with angst. Sarvadaa - always and at all times,
sarvabhaavena - regardless of conditions, nishchantitaiH - in a calm and serene
manner, Bhagavaaneve - seek the Lord alone.
We
do go to our various places of worship and believe we are calling upon Him; but
it is the bhajana of ego! Always from the place of "I" and
"my" for, instead of calming the mind as we enter worship, we bring
with us all the weight of our lives and sit in states of agitation and emotion.
In this clouded state, where is the Divine to enter? The saadhaka,
understanding this, will no longer say 'saadhana is too difficult', but accept
that the change must begin within, that s/he alone can make that first step
upon the path and all subsequent steps will become easier, the greater the
surrender. This capacity to invoke is already in each one of us, but we either
misuse it or are blind to it altogether due to the obstacles within ourselves.
Prayer
or invocation (bhajana) should be from all levels of our personality. There
must be no fence or guard against complete surrender to the process. At all
times, in all our parts, must we be able to give only our best to Him. Our offering unto Him can and must include
service of others and letting our every action be a sign of the Love Divine.
Let our acceptance and surrender to that Divinity shine forth from us and let
our lives become the very hymn of praise.
Whose Work?
Hari
Om
Each 'Choose-day' we will investigate the process by
which we can reassess our activity and interaction with the world of plurality
and become more congruent within our personality.
The next text which will guide the
Choose-day posts is "Tips for Happy Living - jIvnsUÇai[
/jiivanasuutraani", by Swami Tejomayananda (Guru-ji). Choose-days writings
are here to prompt deeper thinking on the choices made on a daily basis and
seek to provide prompts for raising the standard of one's thinking and living.
This text composed in format of Sanskrit traditional teachings, speaks directly
to this purpose. As ever, the full text may be obtained from CM Publications - or your local centre
(see sidebar).
Given
that the human efforts, and the external sources available to support those
efforts, are limited, let us now ask, 'is there not a source of unlmited
empowerment that we can plug in to?'

With the grace of the Omnipotent Lord, however, that
becomes a million times more effective.
One
who is himself dependent cannot be totally depended upon. Help from one who in
turn seeks another's help may sometimes leave us helpless. However, if we
depend upon and seek help of one who is independent, supporter of all,
inifinite in strength, knowledge, welath and virtues, we will be
ever-supported.
If
we plug in to the very source of all inspiration, light and nourishment, we
will gain infinite strength and vitality. Instead of focusing on our limited
efforts and possessions, we ought to focus on our infinite potential and the
eternal grace and strength of the Higher.
Of
course, now we ask, 'how to plug to this infinite source of empowerment?'

Therefore, depending on Him alone, efforts should be
put forth.
When
one is added to one, it becomes two. Basic. However, when one is put next to one, it becomes eleven! Our efforts
get multiplied a million-fold when they are supported by 'the One', that Higher
Essence of Being. You may call It 'God', or you may say there is no God and
that it is but the Highest of Human Potential… but even the latter requires of
us the faith that this is a possible condition and we must ask that inner WE to
assist the little 'me'!
What
we are talking about here is surrendering of the ego to the possibilities as
yet untapped within us. Understanding fully the nature of this grace is the
purpose of the spiritual seeker. Even the atheist will seek to become a better
and more balanced human being, understanding that there are needs for
improvement - if they are any kind of human being at all. What must be guarded
against in the event of one believing in 'God', is that, whilst we can
surrender to that presence, is that we do not then seek to absolve ourselves of
all responsibility in action and progress. The adage 'Lord helps those who help
themselves' is pertinent here!

Monday is AUM-day; in search of meditation
For the next stage of our investigation on
meditation, we are going to study - and practice! - japa as a means to tame the
mind and we shall investigate the Gayatri Mantra.
Here
are the first few images of an ancient text, and the loose English explanation
by Gurudev, on the Gayatri Mantra. Feel free to download these particular
images so that you can enlarge them for easier reading.
