ADVENTURES IN ADVAITA VEDANTA...

Adventures in Advaita Vedanta, the philosophy and science of spirit. We are one you and I; are you curious why?..

Self..."Ish or Less"?

Each 'Choose-day' we will investigate the process by which we can reassess our activity and interaction with the world of plurality.

Last week you were pointed to the Bhagavad Gita as an assistant to decision making. There was also a link to an academic interpretation of the Gita applying decision theory modelling.

For us, though, it is really rather simple. Take a verse and meditate upon it. One of the verses to memorise is this one from chapter two.

Constantly in the study of Vedanta, we are learning that we must detach - and this includes from seeking some response to our actions. Yet we still do it, is it not? We look for acknowledgement of receipt of something sent, of recognition for work done. It is a conundrum of human existence that life goes on whether we receive feedback or not, but that we never fail to seek that feedback in some form or other.

Building our vairaagya, performing our work and acts of social care simply because the work and care require to be done, is a key focus of the Vedantin. To act without expectation of recognition or feedback. What is more, to carry out those acts to the very best of our ability, regardless of our feelings towards the task or the recipients of any benefit from the completion of the task.

It is a choice we make. To act with expectation (selfishly) or not (selflessly).
